The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre (NZMSC), University of Otago is offering a 7-week afterschool programme, ‘Science in the Sea’, at Nelson Yacht Club. The programme will provide the opportunity for hands-on activities, in-depth investigations and discussions in a supportive and friendly environment with NZMSC local educator, Glenis Paul.
The sessions are designed to excite, captivate and extend young minds and bring them in touch with their local marine world. Topics covered will include whales, plankton, sharks, ecosystems, the technology used to study the oceans.
There are a number of clear reasons why everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand needs to have an in-depth experience and understanding of the marine world. The moana is a vital part of our identity and culture, and provides us with over half of the oxygen we breathe. We have one of the longest coastlines and largest exclusive economic zones in the world, with many marine taonga right at our doorstep. The ocean also provides for our economy through aquaculture, fisheries and tourism. The sailing community has a unique connection to the moana.
